Alan Metzel

Northrop Grumman Mission Systems

A CMS member since 2007, Al has served on the Measurement Zone Subcommittee for many years, and is a founding member of the Certification Subcommittee.

His first in-depth involvement with metrology was as Gear Manufacturing Engineer with Mack Trucks Power Train Division for over twenty years, responsible for development and implementation of manufacturing and inspection methods for components for heavy duty transmissions, diesel engines, and gas turbines.

For the past nineteen years he has been Quality Engineer, responsible for Model Design & Fabrication, at Northrop Grumman Mission Systems.

An active member of ASTM, he serves on the Nondestructive Testing, 3D Imaging Systems and Additive Manufacturing committees, the Quality and Statistics metrology subcommittee, and the Smart Manufacturing Advisory Committee.

For many years he has served on the Pre-Engineering Advisory Committee for Washington County (Maryland) Technical High School and the Washington County Public Schools Career Technology Education Advisory Committee. He also served on the W.C.P.S. Second & Third Generation Study Groups for Specialized, Signature, and Magnet Programs, authoring the final report on Biotechnology.

For the past three years, he has been actively engaged with the ANSI/America Makes Manufacturing Standardization Collaborative on Additive Manufacturing, developing “The Standardization Roadmap for Additive Manufacturing”.
