Alan B. (Al) Metzel

As Sr. Principle Quality Engineer, Northrop Grumman Mission Systems, Al is responsible for metrology equipment, methods, and training supporting Model Design & Fabrication, as well as Nondestructive Examination. Prior, he was responsible for development of gear manufacturing and inspection methods at Mack Trucks (Volvo) Power Train Division.

Al received his Bachelor of Science from the Univ. of Tennessee (Knoxville). He serves as an advisor to the Washington County (Maryland) Technical High School, twice serving on Washington County Public Schools study groups on the future of technical education, authoring the report on Biotechnology.

An active member of ASTM, he serves on the Nondestructive Testing, 3D Imaging Systems and Additive Manufacturing committees, the Quality and Statistics metrology subcommittee, and the Smart Manufacturing Advisory Committee. For the past three years, he has been actively engaged with the ANSI/America Makes Manufacturing Standardization Collaborative on Additive Manufacturing, in work to develop “The Standardization Roadmap for Additive Manufacturing”.

A Coordinate Metrology Society member since 2007, he is a founding member of the Certification Subcommittee.
