Keith Bevan

National Physical Laboratory

Hi, I’m Keith Bevan and I’m running for Vice Chairperson in 2019, having co-ordinated the Measurement zone from 2010 to 2016 at the Co-ordinate Metrology Society Conference, and served on the Executive Committee since 2013, including the 2017 chair. I am currently the 2019 chair of the certification committee. Keith is also actively involved in the newly revised education committee.

Professional Career: Keith Bevan is the National Physical Laboratory’s (NPL) Interim Head of Manufacturing & Training, accountable for 50 people across 4 groups, including 4 sites across the United Kingdom. These sites deliver measurement services, research and global training solutions to a range of businesses including the delivery network activities of NPL’s training framework, training materials and quality of delivery.

Keith has been involved in measurement for 44 years having joined Rolls-Royce Ltd (aero engines) in 1975 as an apprentice, working across a range of metrology activities including engine testing, manufacturing, co-ordinate metrology and calibration. During the mid-1980s Keith was employed at Jaguar Cars working in a variety of co-ordinate metrology roles. In late 1989 Keith embarked on a new career in training and education and is still actively involved in passing on his experience to others.  Keith’s training and educational role made use of his measurement knowledge in training students on Co-ordinate Metrology and conventional measuring equipment with Mitutoyo UK Ltd.

Since 1995 Keith has been involved in developing and implementing metrology training frameworks and global training solutions. He is also active in supporting standards committees and the development of Good Practice Guides for industry. Keith was part of the team responsible for the launch of Metrology Technician and Senior Metrology Technician Apprenticeships in 2016 and soon to launch Technical Levels for schools in Health and Science.

During 2012 Keith was part of the NPL Training team that won a Manufacturing Industry ‘Best training scheme’ award through the Manufacturers Technologies Association (MTA).  Keith was also recognised with a Serco Inspirational Leadership Award and a Global Innovation Award for setting the standard in the science of measurement.

Keith is now actively involved in the development and implementation of different learning solutions through not only the classroom scenario, but also e-Learning and blended learning in metrology.

Personal: Keith has a passion for soccer and motor cycles especially the Isle of Man TT and recently continues to take an interest in American football (please do not test me on the rules). In the past, Keith was actively involved in soccer (but old father time has now caught up with his legs). He also completed a 1000-mile cycle ride between ‘Lands’ End and ’John O’ Groats’ in the UK to raise money for an underprivileged children’s charity.
