Abstract

Recent advances in coordinate measurement machines (CMMs), sensors, and quality data management software can shorten the design to manufacturing cycle of aircraft engine components, while at the same time providing design, quality, and manufacturing engineers more information faster. This presentation considers both the classic and additive methods. First, a traditional design–prototype–qualification–manufacturing process governed by AS9100 will be shown. Examples of the components made, the time savings achieved and weight reduction realized with this process will be shared. Second, a demonstrated and qualified design to manufacturing process for 3D printing aerospace engine components, using lightweight materials already validated by leading manufacturers, will be described. Examples of the components made, the time savings achieved and weight reduction realized with this process will be shown. The benefits of using of quality data management software at key points in both processes will be demonstrated, and process cycle times for both methods of shortening time to market for aerospace engine components will be compared and summarized.
