John Palmateer earned Bachelor’s degrees in physics and mathematics; a Master’s degree in electrical engineering and a Juris Doctor in law. John is a retired Boeing engineer. His thirty-eight-year career – the last seventeen as a Technical Fellow – focused on developing and implementing metrology systems including: Computer Aided Theodolites, Tracking Interferometers, Laser Projectors, AM and FM Laser Radar, iGPS as well as related processes such as calibration / certification of these devices and accreditation of metrology software. John has 17 US Patents and 3 European Patents. John also has several peer reviewed papers and has presented at numerous metrology conferences, including CMSC, Large Scale Metrology Conference, American Society of Photogrammetry, and Congrès International de Métrologie.
At the end of John’s career at Boeing he was working on in-process measurements using scanning AM laser radar in conjunction with finite element methods that incorporated gravity for control and inspection during fabrication.
Since retiring John formed JDP Metrology Consulting LLC. Currently John is a metrology consultant for the Rubin’s Observatory (i.e., Large Synoptics Survey Telescope), focusing primarily on preliminary dimensional control of the telescope hexapods holding the mirrors and camera.
