See You in Reno!

What You Can Expect at This Year's CMSC in Reno

This year, the Coordinate Metrology Society (CMS) is proud to provide attendees at the Coordinate Metrology Society Conference (CMSC) with many new and exciting experiences, starting with a brand-new website featuring new information regarding the show and a comprehensive agenda, including the Exhibition Hall layout. We are particularly excited to be adding an extensive archive of our technical papers presented throughout the years, which can be referenced and downloaded online by all CMS members.

The conference festivities will kick off Monday night with our traditional Ice Breaker sponsored by FARO Technologies at the Grand Sierra’s famous LEX Nightclub, which includes cocktails and appetizers alongside the indoor pool. New attendees will be able to meet beforehand at the special orientation to learn about all of the happenings and opportunities at the show. Mentors will be identified for all new attendees to check in with during the week for information and guidance.

On Tuesday morning, the conference will begin with an incredible keynote address by FuseFX an award-winning production studio that produces visual effects for television, film, commercials, games, and special venues by applying a variety of metrology tools and techniques used in industrial applications to film making. The company has provided visual effects for all the major studios on such productions as American Horror Story, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Criminal Minds, Bones, TURN, The Blacklist, Designated Survivor, Empire, Marvel’s Luke Cage, Marvel’s The Punisher, Marvel’s Runaways, The Tick, Scorpion, The Magicians, Madam Secretary, Preacher, Mr. Robot, and many others. Feature credits include Annabelle, Dark Skies, Sinister, and White House Down. You will not want to miss this kickoff presentation!

Paper submissions were extremely high this year and the continued single-track format will allow attendees to sit for all of the presentations during the day. Attendees will still have plenty of time to tour the Exhibition Hall where all of the exhibitors will be demonstrating the latest and greatest technology, software, training, and services. As we welcome traditional coordinate measuring machine (CMM) operators for the first time, the presentation content will include many papers on CMMs, their applications, and crossover software which can be used on our portable measuringdevices.

The Education Zone is again packed with technical updates from organizations including NPL, NIST, ASME, ASTM, and NCSLI. New this year in the Education Zone will be “The Showcase of New Technology.” These Q & A sessions will allow original equipment manufacturers to present on the latest releases of new innovations in technology and software. I am personally looking forward to this programming and recommend you do not miss it! And of course, back by popular demand will be the fan favorite “Ask the Expert” and “Metrology Jeopardy.” A new presentation by the NH Volunteer Spirit of the Year Award recipient will teach all of us about the rewards of STEM education to students at all levels. Exercises and resources for anyone interested in bringing STEM learning back to their region will be shared with all attendees.

Training and CMS Certification is always a big draw to the show and the trend continues this year. CMSC 2018 has double the capacity of last year, and we are filling the classrooms with training sessions by software and hardware providers. Certification prospects will also be able to sit in on a special customized preparatory course developed by ECM and NPL to prepare delegates for the Level-One CMS Certification examination for portable metrology professionals. This is a cognitive knowledge assessment on the principles of 3D portable metrology. Another first this year is the inclusion of traditional CMMs in our show. Vendors will be providing CMM advancements in both software and hardware. The society will be offering a brand-new pilot exam review on applied CMM programming in the Hexagon Manufacturing Intelligence-sponsored Measurement Zone. The 2018 Measurement Zone is our largest to date and Hexagon will feature new scanning, CMM, and automation technologies that are sure to impress.

If you are interested in registering for Certification examinations, please visit www.CMSC.org and sign up at your very earliest convenience. We are asking all CMM and laser scanning experts to please register for an opportunity to take the new pilot exams for both of these categories. The more expert input we have the better, and you will have an opportunity to sample the exam at no charge. Passing scores will become certified once the test becomes live and the application process is completed! Of course, Level-Two CMS Certification assessments for applied skills will be offered again for both laser trackers and articulating arms.

Wednesday night will be another fun gathering at the NRK-sponsored Happy Hour and the CMSC Banquet. We have surprise fun and games planned for this event with the spirit of Reno in mind.

Work hard, play hard is the best way to describe Innovmetric, our yearly sponsor for the 5 Billion Micron Fun Run. This year’s championship will be up for grabs, so it is not too late to start your training!

The CMSC will wrap up on Friday with a tour of the National Automobile Museum in downtown Reno sponsored by Nikon Metrology and LK Metrology. This is one of the top car museums in America, and a must-attend tour for all automotive enthusiasts The museum features a special exhibit titled “Rovers: Exploring the Moon, Mars and Beyond!” Be sure to sign up online, as numbers are limited.

I would like to finally thank all our attendees, exhibitors, and our sponsors for their generous contribution to this year’s event. I am pleased to share all of the excitement of the conference and look forward to seeing all of my new and old friends this year in the best conference venue in Reno.
